EU PVSEC 2020
RE Chair at international conference on PV solar

The Renewable Energies Chair - University of Évora (CER-UÉ, Portuguese acronym) was present at the European PV Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC 2020), which took place online between 7 and 11 September, with the communication “Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Modeling and PV self-consumption strategy optimization, by Ana Catarina Foles, Luís Fialho, Manuel Collares-Pereira and Pedro Horta.

The communication, carried out by Ana Catarina Foles, doctoral student in Mechatronics and Energy Engineering, exposes a model that describes the electrical behavior of the redox flow vanadium battery that is operating in one of the microgrids at the University of Évora (energy capacity of 60 kWh / nominal power 5 kW), and its optimized control, with the integration in an energy management strategy (maximization of photovoltaic self-consumption). The model was simulated and validated experimentally, presenting satisfactory precision.

According to CER-UÉ’s researcher, this model "enables a greater development of energy management strategies, considering the optimization of the battery's internal parameters". Since the "implementation of a control with quick response, allows to deal with the intermittence of the solar, developing faster and more efficient controls", she adds.

EU PVSEC, which had its 37th edition this year, is one of the most prestigious conferences in the field of photovoltaic solar energy, where research centers and some companies participate, to share their latest scientific results in the area.
