UEvora partner with Europe's largest floating photovoltaic project
Renewable Energies Chair

The largest floating photovoltaic project in Europe, promoted by EDIA, will be installed in the Alqueva, Portugal and is being developed in collaboration with the Renewable Energies Chair of the University of Évora.

The University of Évora created in 2009 the first degree in Renewable Energy Engineering. In 2010 the Renewable Energy Chair was created. With this Chair it was possible to complete the educational offer with a Master in Solar Energy and a Doctoral Program in Mechatronics Engineering and Energy addressing topics related to Solar Energy. The Chair currently has a multidisciplinary team covering different topics in solar energy, systems and applications in cooperation with several Departments and Research Units.

The Renewable Energies Chair is responsible for its technical specifications, focusing on its design, technical characteristics, testing and monitoring of this project which will have 10 floating photovoltaic power plants, with a total power of 50 MW, installed next to the primary grid water pumping stations of the Alqueva Multipurpose Enterprise (EFMA) and will occupy an area of about 50 hectares over water. The overall budget for this project is EUR 50 million, funded by the Council of Europe Development Bank and EDIA.

EDIA underlines that from an economic and environmental point of view, "the introduction of photovoltaic energy into EFMA through the installation of a large photovoltaic park is an unavoidable priority", adding that the project "follows the global trend of investing in renewable energy and makes special sense in an area with excellent levels of solar radiation.
